Firefighting monitors and proportioners protecting aircraft

fire protection in an easyjet hangar at BERLIN BRANDENBURG airport

Aircraft hangars pose special challenges for fire protection. Fuel remaining in the aircraft is the greatest risk, especially during maintenance and repair operations (MRO), making it a dangerous ignition source. The new easyJet hangar at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) "Willy Brandt" is now equipped with 8 remote-controlled M4 firefighting monitors as well as a large FD20000 FireDos proportioner – a highly efficient concept for more safety when extinguishing with foam.

To ensure safe operation, aircraft must be regularly maintained and repaired in hangars. A fire protection company was commissioned for the fire protection system of a hangar at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) "Willy Brandt", and decided to use firefighting monitors and a proportioner made by FireDos.

THREE firefighting MONITORS EACH FOR THE PROTECTION OF one AIRCRAFT

The requirement was that the parking area of an aircraft, approx. 4,000 m2, must be covered by 3 firefighting monitors. These discharge fluorine-free extinguishing foam via an additional foam pipe, the premix of which is generated by the FD20000 proportioner at a proportioning rate of 3%. The foam agent used here is VAPUREX® LV ICAO B 3% F-10 #7341 by Dr. Sthamer.

In total, 8 remote-controlled M4 firefighting monitors with foam pipe were installed in the hangar at a height of 3m above the floor. Each monitor is protected by a self-protection sprinkler. The ceiling of the aircraft hangar is equipped with a wet sprinkler protection to be cooled with water in case of emergency.

throwing range TEST: 4,750 LITERs Per MINUTE, 55 METERs away

A throwing range test with water was carried out as part of the commissioning process. The monitors are set to handle 4,750 liters of extinguishing water per minute. During the 4-minute test with 3 firefighting monitors, approx. 57,000 liters or 57m3 of extinguishing water were used. The throwing distance at the selected throwing angle is approx. 55m; at steeper throwing angles or higher pressures, greater throwing ranges are also possible.
