Istanbul Airport, Turkey: One of the world's largest fuel tank farms. A fire there can be extinguished only with foam. The severe demands on the fire protection system are high to meet the stringent safety requirements.

THE SOLUTION: 5 PROPORTIONERS FOR 100,000 L/MIN.

To meet the requirements of the extinguishing water flow rate, five FireDos proportioners of type FD20000 were installed in parallel: Four main and one standby unit, which together generate up to 100,000 L premix per minute.

The fire alarm and extinguishing panel, which controls the fire pumps and proportioners, is equipped with FireDos flow meters to measure the extinguishing water flow rate – an individual solution, tailored to the customer's requirements. This way, the very-low start-up flow rate of only 800 l/min and a stepwise joining of further proportioners allow precise and correct foam agent injection into any extinguishing water flow required.

ADVANTAGES.

STEPLESS JOINING AND CUTTING-OFF OF EXTINGUISHING COMPONENTS.

The purely mechanical system is characterized by a constant proportioning rate across a wide extinguishing water flow rate and pressure range. Connecting and isolating extinguishing devices such as foam pipes and monitors is possible at any time and does not influence the foam quality.

COST-SAVING TESTING OF THE PROPORTIONING RATE.

The proportioners are not only highly flexible and reliable but efficient, too. The innovative FireDos product concept allows precise proportioning rate testing while no premix or foam is produced. After testing the proportioning rate, the foam agent is returned into the foam agent tank. The precise proportioning rate can be tested without generating premix or foam: a cost-saving solution that saves the environment too.

Working principle of a foam proportioner
The ball valve (5) allows switching between injection of the foam agent into the extinguishing water flow and foam tank return. The foam agent can be returned to the tank for testing the proportioning rate. No premix or foam is generated this way, and no foam agent is used.

"Performing a test at an extinguishing water flow rate of 75,000 l/min at an operating time of 5 minutes and using 3% foam agent would require more than 11 250 l of foam agent. The advantage of the FireDos proportioners: No foam agent is used at all", says Ingo Weiss, FireDos Sales Manager.
